Things to Know about Lake Huron

The Huron lakeshore extends 3,827 miles, and is characterized by shallow, sandy beaches and the rocky shores of Georgian Bay. It was originally called La Mer Douce, or “the freshwater sea” by French explorers. It later got its name from the Huron people who lived along its shores.Visitors to Lake Huron can enjoy a variety of activities such as swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, sailing and more. There are numerous parks and trails along the shoreline that offer breathtaking views of this majestic lake.

Blue Water Bridge and River Walk

The Blue Water Bridge has connected Michigan and Ontario, Canada since 1938. This historical twin-span bridge is one of the busiest in North America and is quite the sight to see! The River Walk is a one mile span along the St. Clair River where you can find turtles, watch the boats, see public art displays, and even fish off the pier.

Fort Gratiot Lighthouse

The first lighthouse in the state of Michigan, Fort Gratiot was built in 1825 at the entrance to the St. Clair River. Admission to the park is free, but tours in the lighthouse are ticketed which you can buy on site.  This is a beautiful park that offers a great view of Lake Huron!

Lakeside Park

Lakeside Park is one of two of the main beaches in Port Huron, Michigan. Lakeside has great amenities such as bathrooms, pavilions, grills, volleyball court, and a parking lot. Parking is not free and will require a parking pass. Smoking is prohibited and pets are not allowed on the beach which makes Lakeside a quiet, getaway in East Michigan.

Huron Lightship Museum

The Huron Lightship is a museum ship that served as a relief vessel for other lightships on the Great Lakes. Now you can see a bit of history from the fog horn and twin diesel engines on this piece of American history.
