Pets Welcome

* SOUTH REPUBLIC NEIGHBORHOOD- 3 miles to Michigamme River

* OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND (Hunters, Fishermen, and Snowmobilers Ahoy!)

The Hemlock House is a simple, albiet dated, ½ duplex on the small village of South Republic. Enjoy 925 feet of private space. The walls are thin, and at times you can hear the next-door neighbors with who you share a wall in this duplex.    Great for the visiting friends/family in town, a budget vacation rental to hunt or explore the Upper Peninsula, the visiting professional or someone going through a life change.

This duplex has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. The bedrooms are all upstairs and the bathroom is on the main floor. The main floor washer/dryer is ideal.

Windows overlook the wide, though generally quiet Hemlock Street. There is a lot with solely trees across the lot. There are many easy walking or biking trails, so it is within easy reach to feel connected to nature. The Iron Ore Trailhead is an easy 3 miles North, where you can enjoy a trip into Marquette.

The Hemlock House provides a comfortable living room space. You’ll have  plenty of space to spread out and enjoy. The 3 bedrooms are all upstairs and small. There is 1 Queen bed, 1 Full bed and 1 Twin bunk beds.

There is a washer and dryer downstairs for your sole use during your stay! The washer/dryer is directly across from the only bathroom (main floor).  It’s so nice to be able to warm up your towels for when you get out of the bath/shower.

There is a full, comfortable-sized bathroom on the main floor. Adjacent to the kitchen and washer/dryer.  It has a tub/shower, toilet and sink. It is NOT handicap accessible, as there is a significant step between the bathtub and the floor.

Frequently Asked Questions:

A/C: No We do have a ceiling fan and the portable fans.  Plus, with the wonderful cross-breeze from the living room to the kitchen.

Animals: Squirrels, bats, rabbits, birds, coyotes.  Further outside of town you might catch site of wolves and moose.

ATV/Snowmobiles: Yes, bring them!  You will have to trailer the equipment to the trails. Trail UP18 is approximately 2.9 mile drive.

1 Full bathroom (sink, toilet, shower/tub combo).

Beach/Swimming: The Republic beach is just 3 miles north of Republic.

Bedroom Configuration:
Bedroom #1: Queen bed

Bedroom #2: 1 set of Twin bunk beds

Bedroom #3: 1 Full bed

Boat Launch: If you are bringing your own boat, there is a beautiful public boat launch off of MI-95, next to the sandy swimming area in Republic (North).

Bugs: Typical flies, mosquitoes, and ants.

Cable/Satellite TVs: Yes, there is cable TV with an old school large TV.

Cell phone service: Cell service is spotty in the Upper Peninsula.  Still, we have found that Sprint seems to provide the best service in the area.  AT&T & Verizon has been pretty good as well.

Coffee Pot: Yes, we have a basic drip coffee pot at the cabin. At times there is coffee available, yet we highly recommend that you bring your own. We do not inventory the coffee.

Distances (approximately):

*Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore:  2 hours and 20 minutes
*Tahquamenon Falls State Park: 3 hours and 20 minutes
*Mackinac Bridge: 4 hours

Fire Pit: Yes, there is a small firepit.  Guests must provide their own wood.

Fishing: Bring your poles. Great fishing on the Michigamme River. Enjoy the Republic Fishing Derby in July!

Fishing License: You can purchase your fishing license online at http://www.mdnr-elicense.com/Welcome/Default.aspx

Grill: We have an outdoor propane grill for your use.

Grocery Store:  Meijer:
3630 US-41 West, Marquette, MI 49855   906-662-6300
Right down Hemlock Street (a 2 block walk)  you can find a small convenience store and gas pump in the Oasis building.  While there isn’t normally  large selection, and the prices are convenience-store equivalent, the customer service is top-notch.  There is a larger convenience store/BP Gas station on the corner of U.S. 41 and MI-95, about 20 minutes North of the Hemlock House.  The closest, full-sized grocery store is about a 25 minute drive from the cabin, Ishpeming.  It is the IGA Jubilee right on U.S 41.  If you are driving from Wisconsin/Chicago, the last grocery store is in Iron Mountain.

Handicap Accessible: Must be able to navigate stairs to the 3 bedrooms on 2nd level.

Heating Source: Not only do we have the fireplace, yet we do have forced air heat. The Horseshoe Lake Cabin is much more like a house. It is not a rustic cabin.

Hunting: We do not allow hunting or shooting (even just at targets) of any kind on the 20 private acres, or the adjoining private property.  You can hunt on State or Paper Company land in the area.

Hot Tub: Year-round amenity.  Great fit for up to 2 people.

Internet:  Premium WiFi is available with download speeds up to 50 Mbps.

Kitchen Supplies: Enjoy a small, but full kitchen for your use. Basic dishes, pots/pans, glasses, cups, etc. are provided, including basic kitchen spices. Still, we do not inventory these items, so if there is something specific you would like, we highly recommend bringing it.

Linens:  Yes, we provide you with basic sheets and linens. Just like a hotel, the beds will be made for you upon arrival. If you are particular about the thread count of your sheets, let us know, and we will make sure we leave a bed open for your sheets.

Parking:  Plenty of parking on the street and 1 space in the driveway. Yes, even a 24' covered snowmobile trailer can fit next to the garage.

Pets: Dogs are welcome! Freshwater Vacation Rentals currently charges $75/per pet for your entire stay. Yes, we do accept dogs, yet we do ask that you please clean up after them both inside and outside the cabin. Plus, if you allow them on the furniture, we do ask that you please bring your own linens/blankets for them to sleep on.  Just let us know which bed you will be using with them, and we’ll make sure it is ready for your sheets when you arrive. Plus, if the pet hair starts to build, we do ask that you please run the vacuum. Generally, dogs love the water and places to explore. Pet food does tend to attract mice, so vigilance is needed.

Privacy: Only inside the ½ duplex. On the other side is ample space which is very quiet. It is similar to apartment living where you share a wall with your neighbor.

Security Camera: We have 1 outside security camera on the north side of the duplex which faces the door and another which faces the alley to monitor the snow removal.   There are no cameras inside or near the outside hot tub.

Space:  2 level duplex

Towels: Yes, we provide towels.  Please bring your own beach towels to take to the water.

Washer and dryer: Yes.  Laundry detergent is provided.
Bring your own. It can also be bought at the local grocer.

Hemlock House Review
Cozy place. Nothing fancy. Older place, but clean and tidy. Direct TV / Internet was spotty with the rain. Fans, no A/C. Fans ok until humidity gets high. Suited our purpose just fine.

Hemlock House - Another Great stay
Thank your again for another great stay. Although Hemlock house is an older home, the owners do a great job at keeping it clean. Home is always prepared nicely for our arrival (heated and porch lights on). Communication with Freshwater and house managers always very quick and easy.

Cherry, thank you for taking the time to write this lovely review.  We do so love hearing from our guests that they had a  great time, and we hope that you will come back again!

Stay in UP
We enjoyed our quiet stay. Thank goodness no neighbors. We had all our concerns answered and addressed right away. On top of it we did see a moose.
