BLACK BEAR LODGE ON THE AU SABLE RIVER

*Please note: The bridge is under construction, and you can hear the outside construction through the cabin walls from 7am to 5pm M-F. Due to construction, there is also no river access from the property at this time unless going upriver. You have to take the road detour around to the south of bridge drop off for any kayaking or small boats.*
Just 100 feet off County Road 612, in Frederic Michigan (Crawford County), you'll find this small, charming, classic cabin alongside a beautiful section of the headwater on the Au Sable River. Tis cabin offers fishermen, hunters, hikers, golfers, ATV lovers, snowmobilers, and small families, a clean, comfortable, affordable place to stay with outdoor activities right outside your door! The view of the Au Sable from this cabin is often wide in the winter and narrow in the summer due to the leaves on the many, beautiful trees surrounding the cottage. Although the cabin rests alongside the Au Sable River, it is not easy to enter the river here. The entry to the river is in it's natural setting and not maintained as an entry point.
Drivers often tend to drive a faster than they should on County Road 612, so please beware! Black Bear Lodge is also only a few minutes from Grayling or Gaylord, Michigan, so it's the perfect place to spend a week or a weekend and have plenty nearby places to explore.
Black Bear Lodge offers a full kitchen where you can cook a great meal, and also a charcoal grill if you prefer to have a BBQ. The full bathroom (with shower only-no bathtub) ensures a hot shower after a day on the river or hiking in the woods. There is a queen bed in the main bedroom, built in bunks in the hall that kids adore (the 2nd sleeping area), and a futon is available in the living room for extra sleeping space. Enjoy sitting on the patio with your cup of joe while you catch glimpses of the river down the hill, and at night, gaze upon the stars at the fire pit area, or just relax inside and catch your favorite shows on cable on the large, flat screen TV.
Enjoy the river right outside your door! Walk out to the river to cast your rod, or set your canoe or kayak on the headwaters of the Au Sable (also known as the Blue Ribbon trout stream). Please be careful walking down to the river, the first part is steep. The public access to the river is across the bridge (see map) for easier and safer entry.. If you love to explore, try your luck at the 'Holy Waters' in Grayling, or at the Manistee River just 4 miles down the road from the cabin. If golf is your activity, the cabin is only minutes from the award winning golf courses in Grayling, Gaylord and Shanty Creek.
In the wintertime, snowmobilers will enjoy the miles of state trails nearby. The closest trails are Trail 679 and Trail 7, located just 0.5 miles east of the cabin (See map photo). Not only are Snowmobiling/ATV Trails nearby, but also the legendary “Swamp III & Frederic Inn” is located just down the road (walking distance). If you enjoy downhill or cross country skiing, check out nearby Hanson Hills (Grayling), Treetops (Gaylord), Shanty Creek and Boyne. If the family wants to go tubing, Hanson Hills offers both day and night service.
With “one of the best” state parks only 9 miles away, Hartwick Pines State Park offers scheduled events and activities year round. Enjoy the museum, gift shop, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, hiking, picnicking, bird watching, hunting, and fishing during the day, and return to your comfortable cabin in the woods to relax in the evening.

A/C: There is a window unit only. Ceiling fans and box fans are also available to help keep it cool.
Animals: Coyotes, partridge, squirrels, rabbits, & standard bugs
ATV/Snowmobiles: Bring them and ride right from the property! Trail 679 and Trail 7 are just 0.5 miles east of the cabin!
Bathroom: The main bathroom has a toilet, sink, and shower (no tub)
Beach/Swimming: The river is not ideal for swimming. It is shallow and best for just wading and fishing. Otsego State Park, located 11.3 miles away (13 minutes) has a beach for swimmers.

2nd Bedroom: (in the hallway) twin bunk beds
Boats: You are welcome to bring your own row boat or kayak.
Bugs: Yes, there are plenty of bugs in the wilderness. If doors are left open at the cabin, even for short periods of time, then bugs/flies/mosquitos love to sneak in. We do not spray outside for bugs, as with the natural landscape, along comes bugs. Depending on the level of rainfall, mosquitos can be plentiful. Bug spray is highly recommended.
Cable/Satellite TVs: Yes! There is cable TV only. NO WIFI
Cell phone service: Generally good, however, it can get spotty.

Fishing: Great fishing on the Au Sable River! Just walk out the back door and start fishing! On the part of the Au Sable where the cabin is located, the trout fishing season opens the last Saturday in April. Experienced trout fishermen do well. Bring your poles! One guest said this: "Absolute angler heaven!! Close to several fabulous fly fishing rivers."

Handicap Accessible: Space may be too tight for a wheelchair, however, it is a great space for those that have limited mobility as it is a one level property. You must be able to navigate rough terrain to walk down to the water.

Internet: Sorry, there is no WIFI at this property
Linens: Yes, we provide you with basic bedding, sheets and linens. Just like a hotel, the beds will be made for you before you arrive. If you are particular about the thread count of your sheets, let us know and we will make sure we leave a bed open for your sheets.
Parking: Plenty of parking for vehicles and ATV/Snowmobile trailers.
Pets: There are no pets allowed. Please enjoy this pet free space.
Privacy: During the summer with the foliage, fewer cottages are seen.

Wonderful Little Cottage
We loved staying at the Black Bear Lodge, it was the perfect little place... All the amenities we needed for a week of cooking meals, playing cards, and of course, watching the beautiful river flowing past. Will definitely be back.

Incredible location for avid anglers
Absolute angler heaven!! Close to several fabulous fly fishing rivers. The cabin is clean, very comfortable and easy to locate. I would definitely love to return and create more great memories with my son.

Perfect Retreat
Would love to give the place more stars...was simply beautiful. Myself, and two life long friends chose this location to have a spiritual getaway in which we reconnected with ourselves and participated in a lot of meditation and time to reflect on the past several years. It was the first time we had all got to be around one another since prior to COVID. The cabin was clean, organized, and in the perfect location. We stopped at a local place to grab lunch, The Paddle Hard Brewing Company and were so impressed with our stay and the local scene so we may just make the 5 hour drive to come back more often! Cant recommend it enough. We didn't arrive until around midnight and getting into the cabin was totally painless, simple, and we felt secure knowing it was protected by a lock code. We did make a phone call to staff to ask about a trail behind the property to see if we were permitted to walk it, the staff weren't sure and that was okay with us. Staff answered quickly, were friendly, and tried to provide us with an answer, when she wasn't able to give a yes/no answer she recommended other trails to walk in the area and suggested a state park. Super friendly. Love this place and now think of it as one of my fondest memories.

What a cute cabin! The living room with the wonderful windows gave us an amazing view and a nice breeze! The bed was comfortable too. We had a very relaxing time.

The perfect getaway!
We really enjoyed our stay here at the black bear lodge! Bird action all day, beautiful views, alot of butterflies! It’s an hour from Lake Michigan being so close I took full advantage of checking out Charlevoix and Petoskey! Beautiful sunsets!! We fished at Hartwick pines state park. We also packed waders and walked the Au Sable River!! So much fun can’t wait to go back!

Awesome stay
Great stay a couple extra towels would be nice and maybe a new toaster that don’t burn your bread on the lowest setting. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay around this area

Lovely spot on Ausable river
Great location in small town of Frederic, Michigan. Very comfortable rooms and near to many winter outdoor activities and services. Town of Grayling is only 8 miles away for additional restaurants and services. Town library has computers to use and books and magazines.

A Wonderful Time
My stay at the Black Bear Lodge in Federic, MI was wonderful! I stayed for 3 nights in complete peace and tranquility. The rental is secluded but still close to restaurants, gas, dollar general and I-75. The location provides privacy while still having the safe feeling of the neighbor across the road. The rental was spotless, cozy and had everything you would need to cook a meal (pots, pans, dishes and utensils). The view of the River was the BEST part...even in the Winter (Jan 2020). Getting down to the Rivers edge was a breeze. The view at the bottom was just as beautiful as seeing it from the top looking down. The cable TV worked fine, beds were comfortable, the bathroom had everything I needed, even soap that I forgot to bring. I feel as though I've found a treasure. This was by far one of the best rentals I've stayed in. Freshwater was a pleasure to communicate with and I will certainly be back again...and very soon! Toya

Black Bear Lodge
Had the pleasure to stay in this lodge on a family winter snowmobiling trip. Always skeptical about staying somewhere using just pictures to get my attention. The lodge was everything my family expected. Super clean and ready for use upon arriving. Will definitely book again!

The location is perfect for those looking for a nice fishing trip! Right on a nice stretch of wadable water on the Au Sable. The cabin was clean and warm when we walked in as well. All around great place to stay.

Loved!
Great location if you are looking for a quiet get away. Clean (and I am picky), comfortable and a beautiful view of the river. Yes the neighbors are close but very welcoming and helpful.

This was our second time staying in this cabin and had just as much fun this time. It's located perfect for the ATV trails, it's quiet, cozy and very clean. I love sitting with my morning tea and watching the squirrels and rabbits go by. The caretakers are very helpful and fun. We will be back again.

This cabin is everything we wanted. Quiet and the river watching was so relaxing. Loved the easy access to the ATV trails. We will for sure rent this cabin again.

Fishing Trip With Grandson
It was a great base camp for our trip. Had everything we needed. Not much in Frederic but everyone we encountered were very friendly. Had a great burger at the Frederic Inn. Grayling is close. We were able to find a nice laundry mat to dry some clothes and an Ace Hardware store. Also visited the Hatchery and fed the trout. Good time!

Great weekend getaway

The cottage was fantastic. Easy to find, super clean and property directions/instructions were clear
On short notice we were looking for an affordable and cozy place near Gaylord. This property popped up and fit our wants almost perfectly. It is well suited for 3 (or 4) with a bedroom and a set of bunk beds. The family/living room is great for watching TV or a movie or playing a game. The sunrise is beautiful from the windows in that room as well. The kitchen is set up to cook with everything you could want situated with a cute eating nook. This was an excellent rental which I was very pleased with.

Quiet place to unwind.
The cabin is older, but nicely done inside. If I were to suggest a couple of improvements, it would be this: update the futon with a more comfortable mattress. We only sat on it to watch TV and it got uncomfortable after awhile. The other thing is a pillow top or memory foam topper for the queen mattress. These two things are the only reason I didn't give 5 stars. There is no WiFi but that was a plus for me to disconnect and unplug for real relaxation. With the Au Sable river in the backyard, and very few neighbors, it was very quiet and peaceful. I will definitely come back again!

Beautiful cabin
Had a wonderful time. Cabin was super clean and well set up. Fish didn't cooperate but had a great time anyhow!

Great property in a Great location
This is the second time staying at this property and again we were not disappointed. The location is excellent for my family to snowmobile out of and with Gas and food near by we did not have to go far for anything. The view of the river was also amazing in the winter. We hope to be up again soon. Also, Joan from Freshwater Vacations was a pleasure to work with!

Clean and comfortable
Clean and comfortable, with a nice view of the river. It's fully equipped with everything you need. I booked this place to work remotely during a slow week at work. The cell phone signal was strong enough to create a WiFi hotspot and not need a cell booster to work. Good central location for fishing, snowboarding, hiking, kayaking, etc.

Stay at the Black Bear Lodge
Stayed at the property for three nights. It was very clean and well supplied. Grounds seemed well kept although there was some snow on the ground. Views outback to the river are nice. Three or four people could stay there comfortably. Would recommend staying if it fit your travel needs.

Great cabin and great people!
Before I say anything about the cabin, I have to say that everybody from Freshwater Vacation Rentals that I have had any contact with has been fantastic! They were a major part of why this stay was so enjoyable. Thank you to you all. As for the cabin, it was great! Comfy, unbelievably clean and fully stocked.Just perfect for me, my wife, and our teen and tween daughters. A quick stroll down the hill had you in the Au Sable, and a short drive had us in Grayling or Hartwick Pines State Park. Many fun day trips to further out locations were easily made from the cabin as well. And when we "stayed home" we were very comfy. Indeed, I spent much time just watching the river sweep by. We can't wait to get back to Michigan, and I am sure it will be with FVR again.

Black bear on Au Sable- recommended
This cabin was perfect for a long weekend getaway! It's very clean and well kept. The view is beautiful and there's plenty to do no matter what you are into. Our experience was wonderful and we will be back!

Nice Cabin
Rented cabin for a snowmobile trip. It was clean and well kept and easy access to the trails. Although small it had everything we needed. Beautiful setting right on the au sable river. We will definitely consider for our next kayaking trip or snowmobile trip.

Great place to stay
We chose Black Bear Lodge for our girlfriend weekend. It was a great location for us. The cabin was very clean and well supplied. The only thing we couldn't find was a tea kettle. We would also have liked to have had a deadbolt lock on the door as it was just us girls. We had a great time and would love to stay here again. Thank you for having such a clean and comfortable place to stay!

Peaceful serenity overlooking the mesmerizing Au Sable river
Well equipped cabin with access to everything a nature lover needs. Two suggestions - replace the creaky queen sized bed and repair the back door knob, which sticks. My husband cut himself on it trying to open it. Otherwise a great rustic property!

Cozy and perfect getaway!
This cabin was perfect for a relaxing getaway! The highlight was probably the picturesque view out of the living room and the porch where we could sit quietly under the trees and listen to the river bubble by. The kitchen was well-stocked with pans, silverware, plates, etc. No problems with our stay at all! Thanks!

Cabin was very clean and relatively easy to find. Great views and stocked well with basic amenities such as coffee, sugar, paper plates, etc. Beautiful place to relax and unwind. Hosts were courteous and quick with responses. Thanks again!!

Tranquility Found
Snug, very clean & well provisioned with essentials. Nice patio area overlooking the river. This section of the Au Sable is almost exclusively brook trout. I'm a fly fisherman but light spinning tackle is legal as is catch & "eat". The fish average 6 to 8 inches and readily rise to a dry fly. Location is only a quarter south of the small town of Frederic & a little over 50 yards from a "quite" country road. The town of Grayling is a fifteen minute drive south. Try the Grayling Restaurant for a hearty breakfast or brunch. Only reason I didn't rate five star was the lack of any written instructions & no pass code for wifi. When I called for a code,which I received within an hour, the wifi had an excellent signal. I was also informed that an instruction sheet was in the works. I will rent again.
