*TV with SATELLITE ONLY, NO WIFI

This small, charming cabin is tucked away on a beautiful, private section of the headwater of the Au Sable River, just 100 feet off of County Road 612 in Frederic (Crawford County). The view of the Au Sable is often wide in the winter and narrow in the summer due to the leaves on the many trees surrounding the cottage. The walkway down to the Au Sable has an incline. The cabin offers the fishermen, hunters, hikers, golfers, ATVers, snowmobilers, or a small family, a clean, comfortable, affordable place to stay with outdoor activities right outside your door! The location offers privacy, yet is only a few miles to Grayling or Gaylord, Michigan.  It’s the perfect place to spend a weekend or week.

With a full kitchen, you can cook a great meal, catch your favorite shows with the cable service on the large flat screen TV.The full bath (with shower only-no bathtub)  ensures a hot shower after a day on the river or hiking in the woods. There is a queen bed in the main bedroom, built in bunks in the hall that kids adore (the 2nd sleeping area) and a futon in the living room. Enjoy sitting on the patio with your cup of joe or grilling dinner (charcoal grill) while you catch glimpses of the river down the hill. At night, gaze upon the stars at the fire pit area.

Enjoy the river right outside your door. Walk out to the river to cast your rod or set your canoe or kayak on the Headwaters of the Au Sable– known as the Blue Ribbon trout stream. Try your luck at the 'Holy Waters' in Grayling or the Manistee River down the road just 4 miles from the cabin. If golf is your activity, the cabin is only minutes from the award winning golf courses in Grayling, Gaylord and Shanty Creek.

In the wintertime, snowmobilers will enjoy the miles of state trails nearby (half a mile-‐see photo) as well as the legendary “Swamp III & Frederic Inn” located down the road- walking distance. If you enjoy downhill or cross country skiing, we have nearby Hanson Hills (Grayling), Treetops (Gaylord), Shanty Creek and Boyne. If the family wants to go tubing, Hanson Hills offers both day and night service.

With “one of the best” state parks only 9 miles away, Hartwick Pines State Park, offers scheduled events and activities year round. Enjoy the museum, gift shop, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, hiking, picnicking, birding, hunting, and fishing during the day and return to your comfortable cabin in the woods to relax.

Fishing:
Situated in the Northeastern quadrant of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, the fabled Au Sable River watershed boasts of nearly 180 miles of blue-ribbon trout water, making it the state’s and one of the countries most renowned trout fisheries.
Winding through a gently contoured wooded landscape from its freestone headwaters north of Fredric to its frequently impounded tail stretch funneling into Lake Huron, the river is large and varies greatly in size and characteristics along its length. On the Au Sable, one can expect a healthy dose of small to medium-sized rainbows, browns, and brookies, with the chance of tying into a football-sized brown -- not to mention the healthy influx from Lake Huron’s most important steelhead run.

The Black Bear Lodge is at the headwaters of the Au Sable River. (Fredrick to Grayling)
The headwaters of the Au Sable, just north of Frederic, mark the beginning of a nearly 80-mile stretch of blue-ribbon trout water. These waters are classic American freestone in nature, clear and gravel-bottomed, dominated by brookies with the occasional brown. Pressure along this 13-mile stretch from Fredrick down to Grayling is minimal thanks to other local freestone attractions and limited access.  At Grayling, the river bends eastward towards its Lake Huron descent. Just below, the East Branch injects a welcome shot of cold water. Unfortunately, both sun-wilted humans and trout alike revel in fresh, cold river water making the fabled fishing town of Grayling a haven for canoeists and water fanatics. Luckily, the trout have grown accustomed to the ruckus and success can be easily achieved in this area.

Internet/WiFi:  Technically, there is WiFi at the cabin, yet it is temperamental, so we do not consider it one of the amenities. It is a bonus if you are able to connect consistently.  We are unable to receive a consistent, strong signal at this point. We are working on improving the system.

Restaurant/Bar: The Frederic Inn is less than a mile from the cabin.  fredericinn.com

View: The view of the river can be limited in the summer with the dense trees surrounding the riverside of the cabin.  It is clear in the winter since the leaves have fallen. The view is absolutely gorgeous in the fall with the leaves changing colors.

Stay at the Black Bear Lodge
Stayed at the property for three nights. It was very clean and well supplied. Grounds seemed well kept although there was some snow on the ground. Views outback to the river are nice. Three or four people could stay there comfortably. Would recommend staying if it fit your travel needs.

FRESHWATER RESPONSE:
Don, we are so pleased that Black Bear Lodge worked out so well for you.  The windows across the front of the cottage offers such a great view of the river, and it is lovely there in the colder months.  We hope to see you again!

Great cabin and great people!
Before I say anything about the cabin, I have to say that everybody from Freshwater Vacation Rentals that I have had any contact with has been fantastic! They were a major part of why this stay was so enjoyable. Thank you to you all. As for the cabin, it was great! Comfy, unbelievably clean and fully stocked.Just perfect for me, my wife, and our teen and tween daughters. A quick stroll down the hill had you in the Au Sable, and a short drive had us in Grayling or Hartwick Pines State Park. Many fun day trips to further out locations were easily made from the cabin as well. And when we "stayed home" we were very comfy. Indeed, I spent much time just watching the river sweep by. We can't wait to get back to Michigan, and I am sure it will be with FVR again.

FRESHWATER RESPONSE:

Matt, I hope you can feel kisses through the internet, because we are sending them your way for your kind and generous comments about FVR!  Quality guest service is our #1 priority, so we love to hear from our guests when they feel like we have accomplished that.  Love that you liked Black Bear Lodge - the river is certainly soothing.  We'll look for you on your return trip ti Michigan!

Nice Cabin
Rented cabin for a snowmobile trip. It was clean and well kept and easy access to the trails. Although small it had everything we needed. Beautiful setting right on the au sable river. We will definitely consider for our next kayaking trip or snowmobile trip.

Great place to stay
We chose Black Bear Lodge for our girlfriend weekend. It was a great location for us. The cabin was very clean and well supplied. The only thing we couldn't find was a tea kettle. We would also have liked to have had a deadbolt lock on the door as it was just us girls. We had a great time and would love to stay here again. Thank you for having such a clean and comfortable place to stay!

FRESHWATER RESPONSE:

Peaceful serenity overlooking the mesmerizing Au Sable river
Well equipped cabin with access to everything a nature lover needs. Two suggestions - replace the creaky queen sized bed and repair the back door knob, which sticks. My husband cut himself on it trying to open it. Otherwise a great rustic property!

FRESHWATER RESPONSE:
THANK YOU for your 2 suggestions. We are definitely looking into them. We are happy you found the cabin to your liking. Please consider booking with Freshwater Vacation Rentals the next time you book a Michigan adventure. We have 54 properties to choose from!

Cozy and perfect getaway!
This cabin was perfect for a relaxing getaway! The highlight was probably the picturesque view out of the living room and the porch where we could sit quietly under the trees and listen to the river bubble by. The kitchen was well-stocked with pans, silverware, plates, etc. No problems with our stay at all! Thanks!
