Nice, quiet, peaceful and serene, Wheeler Lake House is great for those who want to unwind. Only 8 homes rest on this private lake so guests are able to take in the woodlands, see the resident swans and loons, and enjoy the stillness of the lake. Jump in one of the two row-boats and enjoy fishing on this all sports lake. Love the winter? Enjoy hopping on the maintained country road and cruise on over to a local snowmobile trail!

Wheeler Lake House consists of 2 buildings: the main house and a bunk house. The main house hosts 2 bedrooms, living room, bathroom and deck. Of course, there is also a fully-equipped kitchen that is perfect for whipping up a meal, or if you prefer, take the food outside and relax while grilling on a propane grill.  At night, enjoy looking at the stars while you sit around the campfire.

The detached bunk house is equipped with a 40” flat screen Smart TV, couch, and Double-Twin bunk bed (sleeps 3). This space is great for kids or teens. There is not a bathroom in the bunk house.

Our family of six really enjoyed our stay in Kalkaska. The lake was so beautiful and we saw a ton of nature. The neighbours were so incredibly friendly and even gave us some recommendations for things to do in the area, they were truly such an added bonus. The home itself was cozy and was very clean but it could use a bit of TLC. All in all, it was a great stay and we would be thrilled to stay again.

Amazing property! Loved the outdoors area. We brought our two younger kiddos and they stayed busy the whole time just enjoying the outdoors and the wildlife. We went fishing on the row boats and caught a bass and a pike (threw them back). Enjoyed the kayaks and paddle boat. We swam near shore. The sand was covered by water but still enjoyed playing in the wet sand. They had plenty of toys in the shed for the kids to play with, water guns, buckets, sand toys, etc. Don’t feed the swans, they keep coming back. lol. The inside of the house was cozy. Not luxurious or anything, could tell some of the linens/towels were well loved but all was clean and tidy. Thought the house and water had a bit of a weird smell to it but didn’t bother us. We used bottled water to brush our teeth. We reached out once with a question and the owners were very responsive. All in all, we had an absolutely amazing stay 5 out of 5 and we will definitely be back!

C” Mother’s Day retreat
Treat your mom to a lakeside cookout! We chose Wheeler Lake House for proximity to Traverse City, the view and the ramp and level terrain that we hoped my Mom, 95, would be able to handle with her walker. It was a perfect Mother’s Day cookout retreat — and so clean and cozy that this very meticulous woman agreed to stay overnight (which gave her a chance to roast marshmallows by the camp fire)! The bathroom might be too tight for others with mobility issues, but Mom was able to manage it. Very well-equipped kitchen with an awesome array of spices for grilling on the deck! As another reviewer noted, it’s well worth driving a couple miles of dirt road to get here! Those able enjoyed paddling across the lake on the kayaks provided for a closer view of beaver dam and wildlife up close. Lord willing, we’ll be back!

Manager Response: Laura, Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We're delighted to hear that Wheeler Lake House was the perfect spot for your Mother's Day cookout retreat. It warms our hearts to know that your mom found the home clean, cozy, and accessible enough to enjoy an overnight stay and roast marshmallows by the campfire. We appreciate your note about the bathroom and are glad it worked for your mom. It's wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the well-equipped kitchen and the kayaking adventures. The drive on the dirt road is indeed a small price to pay for such a beautiful and serene location. We look forward to welcoming you back! -Janelle, FVR

Great weekend
We had a great weekend at the lake! The lake is beautiful. We rowed and paddled our way around. Amazing variety of birds, including an eagle! We enjoyed near by disk golf and wineries. We sat around the fire in the evenings. It's always great to have a full kitchen on vacation. Beds were comfortable. The only issue was the toilet being finicky a few times.

FVR RESPONSE
Kate, we're glad that you had  great weekend!  A lake, boats, nature, wineries and disk golf all make for a pretty great vacation.  We hope that you come again.

We had a wonderful stay at the Wheeler lake house. We had a wedding and it was so nice to come back and relax. Plenty of space for 4 people. We would definitely like to stay there in the future. The cottage has beautiful views of the lake. It was clean and comfortable. We didn’t end up using the bunk house but it was cute and also clean. Thanks again!

Peaceful
Peaceful and quiet setting. Had fun watching all the birds (even eagles), two swans (Bonnie and Clyde), and turkeys. View of lake is spectacular and southern exposure of the house was perfect for the sunshine. House was clean and kitchen was well equipped. Staff was extremely responsive when we could not find the fire wood. This was our second time at this location and we are looking forward to a third.

FRESHWATER RESPONSE:
Cheryl, we love that this was your 2nd time staying and that you plan on returning.  The wild life there is a joy to see, plus who can beat the views of the lake!  We await your return in 2022.

Mid October Fall colors.
What a perfectly magical getaway for us! Shockingly neat and cozy. The lake view unbelievably mesmerizing, with added treats of adorable wildlife. So many visitors. A swan couple, rafter of turkeys, sweet and friendly chickadees, so many blue jays, a bald eagle sighting, and funny red squirrels. It’s worth the drive down the old dirt road.

FVR RESPONSE
Aaron, thank you for this wonderful review!  We love that you saw so many creatures.  It's good for the soul.  We enjoyed having you as our guests and we'd love to see you come back again

Beautiful and Peaceful Setting
This is my idea of the perfect northern Michigan cabin on a lake. This is a true diamond in the rough waiting to be discovered. September 13 and the leaves were turning, no bugs at this time of year, cool nights for a camp fire. The cabin with deck is just feet away from the water, early one morning having coffee two beaver swam 5ft off shore, the local eagle performed three times for us! Cabin is well stocked with cooking gear,wi-fi works, bring bottled water to drink, an axe to split wood and have a great time, we did.

FVR RESPONSE
Roger, thank you for this lovely review.  We love the idea of it being the perfect northern MI cabin, and we whole-heartedly agree!  It was a pleasure having you as our guest, and we hope to do so again.

A Wonderful Escape!
I love Freshwater Vacation Rentals! They are very personable and professional. working with them for my reservation was a Breeze! The property on Wheeler Lake was breath taking and exactly what my family and I needed to escape the Hustle and Bustle of life! Not only is this location within a days trip to all the great sites that Northern Michigan has to offer but this is also a place to relax and do nothing. We enjoyed fishing, campfires, grilling, going out on the row boat and kicking back to watch all the natural wonders. I am looking forward to going back for another visit!

This place is run by an organization rather than by an individual, and they are very responsive and informative. It's so cozy and is equipped with everything you need in a regular hotel. If you need anything extra, there is a small downtown in a 12 minute driving distance. The only thing that I was concerned about was smell of the water. I messaged the owner, so hopefully there will be a fix very soon. If so, I would be interested in returning this same place again in the future!

Freshwater Vacation Rentals Response
Harrison, we are happy to hear that you enjoyed staying at Wheeler Lake House.  It sleeps 7 and has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom.  Only 8 homes are on this private lake so guests are able to take in the woodlands, resident swans and loons, and stillness of the lake.  Thanks for the information about the water.  We will get that check out.  We'd love to have you come back again.
