Marten Lake Cabin is located within the Ottawa National Forest, Iron county, Michigan. Approximately 8 miles south of Sidnaw, in the northern part of Iron County, MI.

The Cabin is situated on 40 private acres , with panfish, including pike, available on the small, 176 acre Marten Lake. The average depth of the lake is 6 feet deep.  The deepest part of the lake is 20 feet.

Live off the grid!  Enjoy this simple cabin in the middle of the forest, along a peaceful lake.  We have a generator for electricity with propane lights.Still, keep in mind that you must be conservative with your electricity use. For example, you can NOT use both the coffee maker and the microwave at the same time.

This beautiful property is surrounded by 1000's of acres of National Forest Land. Great hiking trails, with even a marked trail you'll pass on the way in. An avid hunter would surely enjoy the excellent bird, deer, duck, and bear hunting. If you plan on target shooting, you'll need to use the designated area and be sensitive to the noise that emanates over this quiet, peaceful lake.

Bedrooms: Main floor:    1 double bed

Upstairs Loft: 2 sets of twin bed bunks
Frequently Asked Questions:
Animals: Yes, there are all kinds of animals that like to roam around the forest. While you don't see most of them, you have to be someone who is comfortable in that true rustic, outdoorsy environment. This is not Disney World. We have seen snakes (non-poisonous), mice, squirrels, otters, beavers, skunks and a raccoon. You are on a secluded parcel of land in the Ottawa National Forest. While we haven't seen any moose, deer or bear actually near the cabin, it's not an impossibility. We do our absolute best to keep all the critters away and out of the cabin. Fall is the biggest challenge as the little critters, including mice, are looking for a warm place to stay the winter months. We do our best to keep the critters at bay.

Bathroom: There is one bathroom on the main floor. It has indoor plumbing and a toilet, shower/tub with a sink.

Bedrooms: Main floor: 1 double bed

Upstairs Loft: 2 sets of twin bed bunks

Blinds:  2 pop-up blinds can can added to the property at no additional charge.  Baiting is an additional $80/blind. Baiting will will be done for 2 weeks prior to your arrival.

Boat: We provide a  small rowboat with oars. (Sorry, no motor-- feel free to bring your own)

Boat launch:  There is a rustic gravel boat launch on the northeast side of the lake.

Cell phone service: Cell phone service is generally unreliable in the Upper Peninsula when you travel outside of Marquette and Escanaba. Rarely has anyone been able to easily accept or make calls at Marten Lake. Still, texting is generally a good option.

Dock: There is a small, basic dock on the lake, in front of the Marten Lake Cottage.

Firepit: Yes, there is a firepit in the backyard!

Fishing: With only 3 cabins on the lake, Northern Pike and Perch are plentiful.  Ice fishing is wonderful. you can use tip-ups and watch them from the warmth of the cabin. Guests have also reported a good variety of pan fish.

Grill: There is a charcoal grill available for your use at the cottage.

Grocery Shopping: A good 20 minutes to the closest convenience store in Sidnaw (www.sidnaw.org/mini)  and a good hour to a full grocery store in L'Anse or Iron River.

Hunting/target practice: Yes, you may hunt the 40 acres and use the land for target practice. You are expected to clean up after yourself, hunt within the State laws, including acquiring a hunting license, plus properly manage any animals that you hunt. Please be aware of adjoining property owners.

Kitchen: We have basic kitchen supplies, including a coffee maker.

Lighting:  We have a generator with propane lights. We ask our guests to please be conservative with the lighting in consideration of the generator. Keep in mind that the propane generated lights are generally not as strong or bright as your standard electricity in the city.

Pets: *Pets are welcome! Freshwater Vacation Rentals currently charges $50/per pet.

Road: The road to the cabin is a nice gravel road.  It is not paved.

Swimming: While you technically can swim in Marten Lake, it is muddy and weedy. It would not be considered traditional beach swimming by any means.  Still, for the adventurous spirit, anything is possible. :-)

View: There is a 3 sided view of Marten Lake, and the only place that you can't see the water is when you turn and look at the driveway/woods.  It's a great place with a peaceful view.

Water: We have a basic well at the cottage. Well water is pumped into the kitchen sink and bathroom via the generator.

3rd year in a row renting this cabin
Great cabin. As the title says, we have rented this cabin 3 years in a row now and it is wonderfully remote place. There are plenty of things to do nearby, please realize nearby is relative in the UP. Plenty of waterfalls to go to, we made it to a small one near L'Anse this year that had only one other couple there. Silver River Falls. Not the biggest but very nice with the river cutting through giant rocks. Each year we have seen different things at the cabin but this year the hummingbirds were very in your face. It was also the first year of actually seeing a bald eagle on several occasions. We also saw a Kingfisher which was cool and saw one of the loons you often hear but do not see in the UP. The managers are very attentive and we noticed there was 20% on the propane tank when we arrived, we told them the next day and there was a refill the next morning. 20% is plenty of course but you never know how well a gauge is reading at the upper and lower limits. They seem to keep trying to improve things. Last year many screens seemed to be replaced, though some had new pet damage this year. People, please watch your animals, if they have to keep fixing things they will end up banning them. They also have cleaning supplies, so kindly make it easier on their cleaning people, they do not have time to check every single inch of the place. And Hey I smoke, outdoors only of course, but i make sure my butts go in the ashtrays then the firepit. No need to find piles where you relaxed every day. Overall an amazing place, and we love renting it. The only reason we consider a different one is the distance, pretty much a 14 hour trip with breaks for us. Though if we do decide on another place, we hope to do so from this management company. One last thing, OMG those mosquito eradicators were a dream.

Great peaceful place to escape day to day life.
Great peaceful place miles away from everything but nature. The trail leading to cabin has a creek that must be crossed but our malibu made it across several times without issue . The weeds were tall on the driveway leading to cabin off the main trail maybe cut the middle strip down and warn about the creek to cross and it will be a 5 star location. I am very pleased with the property and our stay at marten lake cabin. Plan on coming back as soon as possible. Thanks for the chance to enjoy your marten lake cabin for labor day weekend . Many memories made there and we had a great stay.

FRESHWATER RESPONSE:
AWESOME! Thank you for the creek/trees suggestion. We are happy you enjoyed the fabulous Labor Day weekend at Marten Lake. Please come back; we would love to host you again.

Review #15825185 “Private Lakefront Cabin on 40 acres-great fishing!”Great Property that is nice and secluded★ ★ ★ ★ ★A great place off the grid and secluded but very comfortable. We arrived about 5pm and the view was amazing. We are from the Metro Detroit area and this is a good 10 hour drive for us and we would consider it again in the future. They say it has a simple well but the water was good. We had lots of fun fishing, and playing around on the property the days we made it back early enough. There were plenty of vhs there to watch in the evenings, when power was being run for showers and such. I would recommend using permethrin on your clothing prior to going if you go during insect season. This place is far off the beaten path and the insect zero in on you when the sun goes down. I will say that the cabin was clearly marked when we went so don't worry about the directions they give you. DO NOT use gps to get out or there. Always start from Sidnaw. I am having a hard time actually trying to limit the great things about this place down to a coherent message without appearing overly rambling. It was a great place to stay with plenty of amenities and so very private seeming.Date of arrival: August 14, 2016

Great cabin
Cabin is beautiful was so much more than we expected ! Beautiful views of lake and eagles .Clean and very comfortable with 2 couples. Will definitely be back . Everyone I spoke to at Freshwater vacation rentals was very helpful . We had a little trouble locating cabin at first but probably our fault for using Garmin and was expecting a rental sign at entrance of driveway . very peaceful and quiet . Nearby lakes was great for fishing .

Bird Camp 1.0
We had a very enjoyable hunting trip this past weekend and hope to return again next season. The cabin was perfect for our group of four, and we were able to hunt Rabbit, Grouse, Woodcock, and Duck! The only things I could see changing is the mattresses in the loft our adding some foam to them, but was still nice for a cabin, also some fly strips in the fall (the pesky buggers were looking for somewhere warm). Thanks so much for sharing this piece of beauty. Reviewer location West Michigan Date of arrival October 30, 2015

Perfect!
The Marten Lake cabin was the perfect place for us. We visit the UP every year and stay some place different (we were looking for that "perfect spot" for us). We think we have found our spot for an annual visit. Description was accurate and it was great to be off the grid, but still have the convenience of running water when needed via the generator. We are so thankful to have found this place and Freshwater Vacation Rentals were great to deal with, we probably won't rent from anyone else again for our Michigan vacations.!
