Basic Horse Riding Information
- Relax and have fun
- Every horse is different
- Hold the rein in each hand
- Keep a loose rein when riding on trails
- Gently pull your right hand to your right hip to turn right
- Gently pull your left hand to your left hip to turn left
- Nudge the belly of the horse with your heels to keep them moving
- DO NOT SQUEEZE your legs together while riding. This asks a horse to trot.
- To slow down or stop the horse, pull back on the reins towards your hips and say, “Whoa.” Don’t keep pulling back on the reins once the horse has stopped. This will cause them to back up.
- Give the horse a pet or scratch on their withers. Tell them, “Good horse!” Talking with the horse can help to increase your bond.
